Episode 106: The Great Dismal Swamp

We are back in NC this week, kinda, to look at a place that since it was found by white colonist has been best described by one word, DISMAL.

For thousands of years before colonizers ever saw the coast of NC and Virginia the native people of the area hunted and cultivated the swamp. When enslaved people were able to flee to freedom, they found a place of peace and safety within the boundary of the swamp.

But there is just something about the place that has unnerved visitors for over 300 years. The park is closed to visitors at night, not even allowing camping, to keep people safe. What is it about this place that makes people so uncomfortable?
