Writers often think that the best way to sell a book is to have the best book. However, what makes a book "good" and what makes a book "marketable" are not the same thing. We know that many excellent books tragically never find an audience. (And some books that are just pretty okay do.) We talked last month about what makes a memoir good--but what makes it actually marketable? When you get into the final stages of drafting, it's time to start thinking about these things, so today we're talking about the six essential components of marketable memoir.

Part of the process of becoming a writer is learning how to read like a writer--to see the bones of structure and past the words to what choices the author is making and why they are (or aren't) working in the interest of the story.
