AI is killing your writing

AI is here, and many writers are turning to it. It can produce words much faster than any human can--but does that mean it's actually helping? Is producing your work faster than you can read and evaluate it carefully actually saving you time? Over the past year, we've been taking careful stock of how LLMs--ChatGPT in particular--works and its effects on writing and writers. We are not impressed. AI isn't really helping you become a stronger writer; in fact, it's killing your writing.

Part of the process of becoming a writer is learning how to read like a writer--to see the bones of structure and past the words to what choices the author is making and why they are (or aren't) working in the interest of the story.
