Ruby Chacón is a community muralist, artist and teacher. She started her professional art career more than 20 years ago after obtaining her BFA from the University of Utah. She is a first generation graduate in both high school and college. After raising her son and nieces, she moved to Sacramento in the Fall 2013.


Chacón co founded an arts and activist non-profit, Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts-MICA in 2003 in an underserved neighborhood in Salt Lake City. Through the organization she worked in partnership with University of Utah faculty after school program called Mestizo Arts and Activism-MAA.


Most of her public art is located all over Utah, Wyoming (Laramie), Washington state (Spokane), Sacramento, and abroad in Morocco and Thailand. She has participated in exhibits all over the US and abroad, participated on many panels, invited as a keynote speaker and commencement speaker, and is published in several books, book covers, and magazines. This breadth of work earned her numerous awards and acknowledgements. Currently she is teaching grades 9-12 at Encina Preparatory, where she serves as the Department Chair, and was also part of the BARKS Equity team.
