29. Russia and Ukraine: How to Talk to Your Kids About This Situation

You turn on the news or hop on social media, and the Russia and Ukraine situation is on - 24 hours a day. It’s everywhere and hard to run away from at this point. Most of you have talked to your kids by now. Maybe you are feeling a little defeated after the conversation. Or you haven’t sat down with them because you don’t know where to start. Armando and I have 20 years of deployments and talking to kids about war and conflict. We approach things differently with our kids, and it might help you talk to yours about this scary and heartbreaking conflict. We are not therapists, counselors, or psychologists, but simply a couple who has dealt with dozens and dozens of deployments to combat zones.   

When you talk with your kids, whatever their age - be open to their questions, make sure they feel validated, and monitor your tv and social media.
