Nas said in 2007, "Hip-Hop is Dead." Whether you agree with that statement or not, there is a simple truth that we all need to acknowledge- the culture needs to change. Episode 8 has a clear title for those that understand rap as a sport and hip-hop as a culture. While the two words may be interchangeable when representing a genre of music, they stand alone in prospects. One is thriving and continuing to grow at a steady, if not recently rapid, pace, and the other is slowly fading away. The competitive sport that is the rap game has some great talent keeping the motion flowing, from established vets to this generation's finest and extremely promising newcomers. The independent wave is everything hip-hop has needed, but it may be too late to save a culture mired in evil and exploitation. We are lost in music about drugs, murder, and toxic energy. As a student of the game and an obsessive fan of the culture, it pains me to see the very thing that inspired so much of who I am today go in a direction completely countering my own growth. Unless we shift where this system is headed quickly, we'll only continue to see more of the negative cycle that has been programmed in us and consistently pushed by the unaffected profiteers. Save the music!
