My guest today is Dr Susie Bennett
She is a researcher focused on male suicide at the Suicidal Behaviour Research Lab (SBRL) at the University of Glasgow.
Susie’s research looks at the cultural and social factors that put men at risk of suicidal despair, and the factors that can aid men to recover a meaningful life. In particular, my research focuses on the dynamics of selfhood, interpersonal connections, emotions, masculinity, psychological pain and suicidal behaviours in male suicide. Considering it is men’s mental health month I think this is a vital topic and Susie is an incredible researcher and her empathy for suicidal men and her passion for the subject.
Expect to find out:
- Why emotional suppression is so damaging
- How calling men toxic is preventing them from opening up
- Why telling men to “talk about their feelings” isn’t enough
- Why suicidal men are actually incredibly wise people
- The importance of belonging and the impact of social isolation on men
And a whole lot more
