For our summer series, we are reposting this episode from our ‘Path of Discipleship’ series. It explores in depth one of the signposts of path of discipleship. Here is how it was introduced last year:

****
This week’s gospel reading (Matthew 6: 19-34) brings us one step further along our path together. The fundamental question of discipleship, “Who do you serve?” is explored more deeply here. Do we serve Christ Jesus or are we serving Mammon (the Spirit of Materialism)? Another way of saying this is: What is the center of the Christian Cosmos?

It is our destiny to be living in an age when the world is more and more deeply permeated by a consciousness that believes the true treasures are the ones that can be stolen from us: our very culture is founded on and in materialism. Again, the Christian disciples are called to refine their capacity for discernment and strengthen their powers of faith, thereby establishing a different culture.  Are we spending our forces gathering treasure on earth or are we seeking heavenly treasures—treasures that do not decay or rust, that cannot be taken away—treasures that are eternal?

By renewing our faith over and over again, we can begin to live like the lilies of the field; trusting completely in God’s wisdom, submitting to His will and thereby, flourishing.
