Break out your tissue box as we get real about the struggles and joys of parenting events that turn out differently than we expect! Ella's tips for being a good parent and a good friend are so helpful!
Tips from this episode:
Separate your parent role from your professional role. Especially if you work in a medical profession, it can change the approach of the providers if you try to act in your professional capacity vs your parental one. Consider whether your parenting choices are based on wanting to be a good parent or coming from a place of fear and guilt. If you have a NICU baby, trust the nurses and go home and take a break to take care of yourself and your other family members. Consider asking good friends to do a relief sit-in for you. Being thankful and grateful can change your perspective even when your circumstances have not changed. Be sensitive to the fact that making a big deal on social media about milestones your child has reached might be hurtful to others who have children who struggle to reach milestones. Try to love your child well and enjoy them where they are regardless of the milestones they may or not be reaching. Make your “have to” your “get to”.
How to support your friends with special needs children: Be present and engaged. Find out what works for your special needs family, and try to provide that. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and don’t be afraid to be a part of their lives, because you’re wanted and they need you.
