044. Tricky Transition to Leadership with Alena Sviderskaia

This week's episode is all about how to transition into leadership.

This is a very common story.  You are an outstanding individual contributor.  Exceptional at your chosen craft (software engineering, finance, digital marketing, whatever that may be). You get tapped on the shoulder and promoted into your first leadership role.

What typically happens from this moment onwards is a rollercoaster of emotions.  You go from euphoric highs that you have finally been recognised for your skill and your hardwork through to the thud of anxiety as you come to realise that no one has shown you what it means to be a leader.

We are joined today by Alena Sviderskaia, a clinical psychologist turned coach who helps companies turn the managers into high performing leaders.  The leaders then facilitate positive change and generated results for the organisation.

During our conversation we discuss key topics like the difference between manager and leader, the emotional journey that new leaders encounter and Alena provides practical advice on how to coach and mentor a new leader through that transition to make it as smooth as possible.

We also discuss the difference between mentoring and coaching and role that both can play.   We address some of the key experiences that new leaders often go through including some level of imposter syndrome.
