038. Leaders with a Capital L with Brett Larson

Today we discuss the current state of leadership development within organisations.

We are joined by Brett Larson of WL Gore and Associations, the organisation that brings you the famous material Goretex.

Brett is a leadership development coach within Gore and also part of an organisation called Synaptic Leadership Development. 

He is also the author of the book "Leaders with a Capital L" will be released in January 2022.

In today's conversation we explore ways to develop leaders and rethink traditional approaches.  Typical approaches would involve sending a leader off on a leadership course, some place miles away from their work environment.  Brett has been exploring a more group and team coaching approach where the leader is development within their normal work environment and where the whole team are involved.

Just like "it takes a village to raise a child" it also takes a group of leaders to develop future leaders" (Brett Larson).

We explore how more experiential approaches to learning leadership could yield better results and greater impact. 

We also discuss emotional intelligence and its role in developing great leaders.  

Brett discusses the HUMBLE model more leadership for HUMan Based LEadership and the need for humility in our leaders.

We discuss the process of giving feedback at length including that it takes courage to give feedback and therefore when feedback is offered we should see that as a sign that the person giving that feedback cares about you and your development.
