6.192 SOCIAL INTERACTION: Affect and Engagement: Show how to be gentle

Your child does not yet understand how their actions affect others. They need lots of models of how to be gentle.

Be alert that a strong reaction is a strong reinforcer. Give lots more attention to soft touch than you give for a mistake.

Today’s activity: Show your child how to touch gently. At the start of an activity, say, “Soft touch” or “Be gentle” as you demonstrate. Give lots of attention for gentle touch. Redirect if your child is too rough.
