“The truth of your pain, which you are entitled to hold, feel and experience does not / should not come at the expense of those around you.” Nikki Sinikiwe from Naaya Wellness
The reverse is also true. There’s no need to make allowances for others to mistreat you because they’re suffering. You can still have boundaries. You can still let them know that’s not acceptable – yes, even though they’re hurting or have been hurt in the past. Because allowing it only spreads the suffering and doesn’t allow them the kindness to see how their actions are affecting those around them. Without that kindness, how do they heal?
