Sarah clutches her puppy Max's leash tighter as a chill runs down her spine. The street is empty, but she can't shake the feeling that someone – or something – is watching her. Her footsteps quicken, echoing off the crumbling sidewalk. The sensation of being followed grows stronger with each step. 

Finally reaching her own house, Sarah fumbles with her keys, her hands trembling as she unlocks the door. Max whimpers softly as they rush inside. She immediately locks the door, then moves through the house securing every window, drawing every curtain. Her heart pounds in her chest as she grabs Max and races up to the attic. 

The old attic has always been her sanctuary, a place she made cozy with string lights and old quilts. She plugs in her phone, needing the comfort of knowing she can call for help if necessary. Max curls up beside her as she retrieves blankets from the ancient cedar chest, building a nest of warmth against the autumn chill. 

The small fireplace in the corner, a remnant from when the attic was a living space, crackles to life as Sarah strikes a match. But just as she begins to relax, a thunderous crash echoes from downstairs. Max's ears prick up, and a low growl rumbles in his throat. 

Sarah creeps to the attic window, her breath catching in her throat. In the moonlight, she sees a dark figure at her front door, attempting to break in. Without hesitation, she drags the heavy oak dresser across the floor, positioning it against the attic door. Her hands shake, but she keeps moving. 

Behind a loose panel in the wall, Sarah knows there's an old service tunnel, a remnant from when the house was part of the Underground Railroad. She's never had a reason to use it before, but tonight, she's grateful for its existence. She gathers her blankets, scoops up Max, and slips into the narrow passage. 

The tunnel is cold and dark, but Sarah makes it comfortable with her blankets and pillows, creating a small haven. Max snuggles close, his warmth reassuring. As footsteps echo through the house below, Sarah holds her breath, one hand buried in Max's fur, the other clutching her phone. In this moment, their hiding place feels like the safest spot in the world, even as the night grows longer and the sounds below continue.
