*MANN AGED SPECIAL* TOKYO VICE PILOT


We return to Michael Mann and our completist review of his directorial works with a discussion of his brand-new HBO Max program, TOKYO VICE, which premiered on on 4/7/22. Mann executive produces the series and directed the pilot, his first directorial credit since the criminally underrated Blackhat from 2015.   

Based on the 2009 memoir of the same name,  it's about journalist Jake Adelstein and his 12 years as the first non-Japanese  reporter at Yomiuri Shimbum, a large, conservative national newspaper, in the late 1990s. Hoo boy! He reported the crime beat and got up into a lot trouble in that time. Baby Driver stars along with ALL TIME acting legend and podcast fave Ken Wattanabe. 

In our MANN-USCRIPT section, co-host Thomas will go into a little more detail about the book before we dive into the pilot.

Mann's last pilot for an HBO series was LUCK, which was not very good and was cancelled after an abbreviated single, unsatisfying, season. Is this a TV course correction or nah?  HBO Max is releasing the entire series in big weekly Thursday chunks rather than their usual weekly single episode rollout. Why? Is it not considered "prestige" despite its pedigree and star power? Are they messing with us or simply dumping Vice? Tune in and find out.
