4X4: MIKE NICHOLS PT 1: SILKWOOD (and early days).
Mike Nichols (1931-2014) was a stage sensation early in life with unprecedented success as performer and director. His first two films, WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF (1966) and THE GRADUATE (1967), which won him an Oscar at age 36 began what looked like a world-beating career as a singular film talent with impeccably urbane taste, brilliant facility with actors and a strong cinema visual flair. A series of film disappointments (covered in the pod) followed until Nichols retreated from filmmaking for nearly a decade. Why? We talk about that mystery before diving into his comeback film, SILKWOOD (1983), his first of four collaborations with Dame Queen Galactic Benefactor Meryl Streep (the four projects we are covering for Nichols’ 4X4). In retrospect one of the all time great casts,
Nichols would subsequently split time between the stage and film until his death. Were his later films able to cash-in creatively on the promise of his first two films? Stay tuned the next few weeks. Songstress and super Streep fan Andi joins us.
