4X4: HARMONY KORINE PT. 2 OF 2: HARM FLORIDA
LOOK AT MY SHIT
FLORIDA MAN, SHARK, WOMEN, ALIEN
SPRING BREAKERS & THE BEACH BUM
Spr-ee-ee-ee-ing Br-ea-ea-ea-ea-k. The three little chickies hatching this week’s mayhem are not your regular indica blend of calm when host Ken taps out and frequent guest to the show Ryan, the original Arizona Man, rejoins Jack and a well(whisky)-hung(over) Thomas to discuss Harmony Korine’s Florida duology (SPRINGBREAKERS and BEACH BUM). In an episode originally intended to litigate Ryan’s Letterboxd review of previous episode’s Julien Donkey-Boy, the tables turn like in kitchen wrestling when Ryan slips out Jack’s hug & Thomas’ chokehold to pin both to the courtroom’s mat when he uncovers during the episode Jack and Thomas’ stark disagreement on the merits of Korine’s two most recent works. Also, bonus lessons from Ryan’s big galaxy brain on American desegregation history and Florida geography.
Discover the lyricism of SPRING BREAKERS (2012/2013), edited and scored for what Harmony calls his “liquid narrative,” the film that earned more in its opening weekend than all previous Korine films’ total box offices combined. Listen as Jack complains about the film that earned more in its opening weekend than all previous Korine films’ total box offices combined’s repetitiveness while Thomas defends its structure, excesses, and the repetitive “liquid narrative” against Jack’s complaints about the editing and repetitiveness of this first of two Korine films with Korine’s Florida aesthetic on full display in these two Florida films shot on location in Florida by Belgian cinematographer Benoît Debie, best known for his work on features including Irréversible (2002) and, as mentioned in the show, Enter the Void (2009).
Afterwards, chill not with Gary Oldman for whom the script was written but Matthew McConaughey, man, as Moondog for our final Korine 4x4 film THE BEACH BUM (2019) as this blocked poet plagiarist gets (pot/Parrot)head-y in the Florida Keys. Speaking of head, observe a new spiritual level of love and stoned cunnilingus between Moondog and exorbitantly wealthy wife Minnie, played Isla Fisher, as they reconcile. Chill with triple-threats Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. and James William Buffett--playing, respectively, Snoop Dogg as Lingerie and Jimmy Buffet as himself--along with a cast of half-dozens, including WTF live-action cartoon performances by Jonah Hill and Martin Lawrence, on the way to (entitle/enlighten)ment. Alright, alright, alright.
