Ridley Scott’s latest epic sees Joaquin Phoenix portraying one of the most famous commanders in history. Rooted in showcasing the constructions of power and nationhood endemic in 18th century France, Scott’s Napoleon is a meditative depiction of a man whose power is often shown to be adolescent and pathetic. Yet, it also manages to capture his enduring legacy as a military commander and an architect of French military power.
