Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 epic captures a moment in American history that continues to dominate our economic landscape today: the formation and birth of capitalism. Set during the Californian oil boom in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it follows the life of Daniel Plainview - an oil baron - who discovers oil just outside of Los Angeles. The new American frontier is now one that is driven by the promise of eternal wealth. Bathed in oil, literally and metaphorically, oil is the very thing that creates Plainview, but it could also be the very thing that destroys him.
