In 1883 Carlo Collodi published 'The Adventures of Pinocchio' - a coming of age Italian novel about a woodcarver and his marionette puppet. Guillermo del Toro's adaptation is set against the backdrop of Mussolini's Italy - a world where coming of age in a time of mass manipulation could be quite challenging. Del Toro's story is about loss, youth, age, and the meaning of life. Littered with del Toro's signature fantasy gothic, this one had us grappling with all sorts of themes.
