Our guest this week is Jeff Smith from Colorado Craft Beef. The land where their ranch is located was originally homesteaded in 1917 by his wife Kara’s great, great grandfather during the Enlarged Homestead Act of 1909. This is a family business at its core, and they’re committed to building relationships with their suppliers and customers alike. Their beef is raised in the sand hills of northeastern Colorado in an environment five generations rich in respect and passion for the land and animals they care for. Their mission is to not only provide consumers with a high-quality beef product, but to also engage with those who are unfamiliar with the importance of knowing their roles within the industry—and in agriculture as a whole. Today we will get into the business side of beef producers—sales, logistics, processing, competitors, labeling, and even the issue of feeding the world. We hope to all learn more about this process so that we can have a greater appreciation of all that goes into the process of raising and harvesting the meat that we eat.
