Today’s business podcast is a little different, and that’s all down to my guest, chef Tom Kerridge. Except that I didn’t invite Tom the chef on to the show, I invited Tom the business man, and I’m pleased to say that’s who I got.
The first half of the show is an impassioned plea from Tom for help – not for him, but for his industry. I am comfortable that he talked a lot of sense – I hope you agree.
We then turned to Tom himself, to his career and to his business skills.
Topics covered off included:
· All business owners take a first really challenging step – the decision to start their own business. What (or who!) made him decide to do it, did he have a business plan and (if he did) did he stick to it.
· Being an expert in your field is one thing, running a business is another. He may be a great chef, but what does he know about marketing, finance, HR and all of the other stuff involved in running a business? In those early days, how did he acquire those skills – by learning them or by paying others to do stuff for him?
· He will have learned much about business on his journey. What words of wisdom would he share with those setting up a business now, be that in or out of the pub trade?
· He and I both have portfolio careers - what advice would he have if someone’s running a successful business and is looking to do other things at the same time?
