The last time I listened to what Steve Baker MP had to say, he was guesting on Peston on ITV. Today I have his attention for half an hour, and so do you.
This is a business show, not a politics show, but the two are deeply intertwined, especially right now – we can’t talk about one, without talking about the other.
We start by exploring the job of being an MP, of Steve (in effect) running his own business, and the impact of the lockdown on that business. We talk about his considerable business experience before becoming an MP, and how that colours his work now.
And looking forward, we hear Steve’s thoughts on how the Government might wean us all off the current much valued financial support for businesses.
Given his role on the Treasury Committee, Steve talks about his (revolutionary?) wish for change in the banking system, and how that might benefit business, and be for the greater good.
And I guess it’s impossible to talk to someone with Steve’s past role in Brexit without the B word cropping up. Where are we now? Where are we going? Will businesses ever get certainty around the future? And if so, when?
Steve’s career began in the Royal Air Force as an engineer officer working with Tornado, Jaguar and the Adour aero engine. He became a Chartered Engineer through the Royal Aeronautical Society and held a military airworthiness licence. After his time with the RAF, he read for an MSc in Computer Science at Oxford University (St Cross College) and joined a specialist, entrepreneurial software firm as Head of Consulting and Product Manager before taking on various senior roles in business software.
Steve was elected to Parliament representing Wycombe in 2010. He served first on the Transport Select committee before moving to the Treasury Committee. He was elected to the Executive of the Conservative 1922 Committee by Parliamentary colleagues.
In his spare time, Steve enjoys skydiving, motorcycling and spending time with his wife and godchildren. Steve is a Fellow of The RSA, amongst other things.
