In this episode we will talk about the two of the biggest mistakes students make when applying for colleges concerning their extracurricular activities.

What Universities Really Want

Top universities are looking for students who have shown growth and dedication in their extracurriculars.

Avoiding the "Study Robot" Trap

What you don’t want to be is what I call a "study robot." Yes, a perfect 4.0 GPA is impressive, but if that’s all you bring to the table, it shows a lack of balance.

A Simple Example of Growth

I will give an example of a non-traditional extracurricular that would show leadership, organizational skills and community-building - all things that stand out to universities

What Doesn’t Work

On the other hand, listing activities where you spent minimal time, like 2 hours a week volunteering, won’t impress anyone. Universities are looking for depth, not breadth.

My Personal Regret

Personally, I competed in many state and national chess competitions, but I never reached the Master level. That’s something I regret because it could’ve made a bigger impact on my college application. So, my advice to you is to aim for a high level of achievement in your extracurriculars, whether it’s sports, academics, or hobbies.

Closing

I hope this advice helps you refocus your extracurricular efforts.
Good luck, and have a great day!
