In this episode, Dr. Ramesh, the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) at Deutsche Bank for the UAE and Saudi Arabia and Head of Credit for the CEEMEA region, shared insights into the multifaceted role of risk management in financial institutions. He explained that a Chief Risk Officer manages various risks, including credit, market, liquidity, operational, compliance, and reputational risks. Dr. Ramesh emphasized the importance of risk-taking in banking, highlighting that avoiding risk entirely is not feasible, as risk is inherent in the business. Instead, he advocated for a balanced approach to risk management, where risks are managed, minimized, or mitigated to ensure the institution's growth and stability.Dr. Ramesh also discussed his journey into risk management, which was influenced by his father's career in banking. He recounted pivotal moments in his career, such as pursuing the CFA while working and gaining international experience in London, ultimately leading him to his current role. He shared his unique "60-day method" for adapting to new responsibilities, which involves dedicating the first 30 days to self-study and the next 30 days to engaging with stakeholders to solidify understanding and build relationships. This method underscores the importance of thorough preparation and stakeholder engagement in risk management. The episode concluded with Dr. Ramesh offering advice to those interested in pursuing a career in risk management. He stressed the significance of reading extensively to develop a holistic understanding of the field. He recommended obtaining relevant qualifications, such as the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) certification, early in one's career. Dr. Ramesh cautioned that as personal and professional responsibilities increase, finding time for further education becomes more challenging, making it crucial to prioritize qualifications before committing to additional obligations.
