This episode is going to dive deep into the song “Crazy Like Me” a song I wrote in the mid 80 during the time I was singing, playing keyboards and my 12 string acoustic guitar in the band Danger.
Crazy Like Me was one of those songs you just write without any expectations of playing the song out live or even recording it.
Funny how you only remember the good parts, I’m sure there is a whole lot more that went into writing this song, but all I can remember is playing in our rehearsal studio, sitting on the edge of the drum stage and the only one in the room was the bass player, Mark Canaday, who was very “instrumental” in all of the songs I wrote for Danger, his bass playing and arrangement took the songs in a more progressive nature, if I remember correctly Mark’s influences were the The Dixy Dreggs (AKA) The Dreggs, Jeff Beck amoung other Rock, Jazz and Progressive Rock Groups, and have a Bass Play that could sing was a real treat, in my experience playing in bands, it was hard to find someone who could sing, or a band member that even wanted to sing lol.
Nothing sends chills up and down one's spine like tight harmonies. Take for instance the Beatles, Eagles, Boston, The Mama’s and the Papa’s, Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Alice in Chains and many more that could bring the Vocal harmonies to Life.
I have my 12 Ovation Acoustic Guitar in my hands and would love to play my original acoustic version of the song, and then I would like to play the recorded version with Danger, this song has been recorded many times, I was not in the studio at the time but when the band was recording music tracks for the song Crazy Like Me somewhere in the North Hollywood area, the bass player for Great White stepped in the played the bass tracks for the song, this story was kept private at the time because Great White was under contract under their new recording label
Lots of crazy shit goes on the studio, for instance when we recorded Crazy Like Me, I had laid down my acoustic guitar tracks, to me I thought I did a pretty good job but the lead guitar player Denny Barry must have thought otherwise, because he re-recorded all of my a acoustic guitar tracks, this was kept quiet for many months until one day I said to Denny, man those guitar tracks came out awesome, that’s when he confessed and said, well man I had to redo the guitar tracks, I took no offense after all Denny’s was the lead guitar player.
The song Crazy Like Me was recorded many times by other artists, one artists who was a guitar player asked me if he could re-record the song on his new album, not sure what happened after I gave him permission but I never did hear the finished recording, all I know is that his label paid me very generous to license it.
Crazy Like Me was one of those songs that touched peoples heart, I think because I believe that everyone feels like “am I the only one who feels this way” and am I just “Crazy”! trust me there has been many times where I felt this way and though know-one else could ever feel this bad or go thru some of the shit I went thru, this led me to right the song, Crazy Like Me.
