There’s a beautiful magic that unfolds when we begin to honor every part of ourselves—our passions, our pasts, and those pieces of us that have been waiting, perhaps quietly, for their moment to step into the light. This is a theme I’ve explored deeply in my own life and work, and recently, I had the privilege of witnessing this transformation in someone I deeply admire. Mirtha’s story—a journey from artist to lawyer to artist to tattooist—reminds us all that our identities are never fixed. They are living, breathing, and evolving alongside us.
Mirtha’s story began with art always feeling like a piece of her story and then she went to college and then law school, beginning her professional life with a career in law, family, and a stable life. But beneath the surface was a longing for something more—something creative and deeply personal. What struck me most about her journey was her refusal to abandon any part of herself. Instead of leaving behind her identity as a lawyer, she asked it to take the seat next to her while her artist-self stepped forward. This isn’t about discarding who we’ve been; it’s about expanding into all that we are. It’s about courageously nurturing those neglected parts of our spirit and letting them thrive.
I loved how Mirtha described scars—both physical and emotional—as proof that we’ve lived, as beauty in their own right. Her work as a tattoo artist now transforms those scars into art, honoring their story while creating something new and meaningful for the wearer. It’s a powerful reminder that healing doesn’t mean erasing what’s happened to us; it’s about integrating it, celebrating it, and allowing it to shape us into something even more beautiful.
For so many of us, especially women who’ve spent decades fulfilling roles and expectations, there comes a moment when we’re called to reclaim ourselves. It’s a call to honor the dreams and desires we’ve set aside for others. The question is: Will you have the courage to answer? Will you embrace the curiosity to explore what’s waiting to emerge? The journey isn’t without fear, but it is profoundly freeing. And as Mirtha’s story reminds us, the act of honoring every part of who we are creates a legacy—not just for ourselves, but for those who watch us and learn from our courage.
