Something that draws me to the wine industry, perhaps more than anything else, are the stories of the people within it. The stereotypical story I discover is a story of a family with an ancestry stretching back to some courageous individuals who set out to do something beautiful and daring. The stereotypical setting is a place like the Barossa Valley, settled many many years ago by German settlers fleeing persecution in Prussia. They arrived in Australia, mixed their labour with the land – and today we are the beneficiaries of that narrative. The Riebke family, of German origin, is synonymous with the South Australian wine scene. Carol and Nick Riebke are part of that legacy and see themselves in the custodians of their ancestor’s story. To that end they started Lost Penny Wines, named after the countless lucky pennies that can be found in the vineyards surrounding the winery. The names of their wines all capture the story of the surrounding places and characters. I have it on good authority that the quality of the wines speak for themselves. Nick and Carol Riebke joined me on the show to share the story of a group of German settles who fled Germany many years ago and came to Australia and ended up crafting a magical legacy of wine, a legacy that Nick and Carol hold high with great pride and effect.
