After Mordecai refuses to bow to Haman, "the enemy of the Jews", sends out a decree with the King's signet ring to annihilate their entire race. Mordecai goes to the gate of the Citadel in "sackcloth and ashes" and wails creating a chaotic scene that gets the attention of Queen Esther.
