Hebrews 1:5-2:9

A. The Appointed Heir of All Things - 1:1-3

B. The Son is Superior to Angels - 1:4-2:18

1. His Deity: The Proof from the Scriptures - 1:4-14

a. Having become (human), better than the angels (v4a)

b. The Son inherited a more excellent name (4b)

c. At His incarnation, He was begotten by God (5a)

d. I will be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me (5b)

e. The Son brings the firstborn in, the angels worship Him (v6

f. Angels were created to serve the Son with devotion (v7)

g. He has an eternal throne, is anointed by the Spirit (v8-9)

h. Verses 10-12:

1. The Son is superior in His foundational existence

2. The Son is the Creator of the universe

3. The Son is sovereign over the universe

4. The Son is the unchangeable Lord

5. The Son is eternal

6. The universe will some day be discarded

i. He is glorified and is seated at the right of the Father (v13)

j. Angels are ministering spirits still at work (v14)

2. The First Warning -The Danger of Drifting - 2:1-4

a. Pay closer attention, don’t drift away (v1)

b. The word spoken through angels proved reliable (v2)

c. You can’t escape judgment if you neglect salvation (v3a)

d. The gospel was declared by the Son to the Apostles (v3b)

e. Authenticated by God, the Holy Spirit, signs, wonders (v4)

3. His Humanity: Proof from His Sovereignty -2:5-9

(a) The sovereignty was promised to man, not to angels

(b) Man’s sovereignty and right to rule was lost

(c) Jesus won back this sovereignty for man

(d) Jesus will rule sovereignly in the Messianic Kingdom (e) This was never promised to angels

(f) He is superior to angels
