Mick McCabe was born in Allen Park, Michigan and graduated from Allen Park Cabrini High School and then graduated from University of Detroit before embarking on a 46-year sports writing career at the Detroit Free Press starting in 1970. While covering a variety of sports assignments, his primary focus has been on high school and college sports. He was nicknamed “Son of Swami” for his predictions of high school football and basketball games. In 2010 McCabe was named the Michigan Sportswriter of the year and has won several state and national awards. In 2014, he was only the fifth sportswriter to be inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame. McCabe’s focus on high school girls' athletics led the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) to rename their Miss Basketball award honoring the state’s top senior female high school basketball player to the Mick McCabe Miss Basketball Award. Mick McCabe was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
