A few thoughts from the panel:
"Empathy will be very important in the coming year. Dealers need to focus on understanding the customer's current dilemma, what is most concerning and important to them, and advise them accordingly. In many cases purchasing or leasing a new vehicle is not going to be the answer. Developing a "trusted, advisory" relationship will prove to be quite valuable in the long run." Doug Reeves

Creative pay plans and work schedules will help, but more than anything may be a true uniting of sales and service, where if a customer simply can't afford a new vehicle but agree that servicing their current vehicle is a wiser move at this time, that the salesperson is rewarded to guiding the customer to service." "The current situation of how inflation is effecting purchasing vehicles needs to be addressed by a stronger emphasis on Service and on training existing sales and management teams to better relate to, and empathize with customers." Larry Feldman

"I think the industry needs to focus more on retention (customers and employees) in both variable and fixed ops.

Pay plans should be structured toward activities and behaviours that drive results and should be rewarded accordingly.

Owners and Managers need to lead cultural change so that customers want to buy and service, and employees look forward to going to work.

I don’t think the industry is broken and needs to be fixed. I believe its dysfunctional in some ways and needs to better balance and align, people, processes, and technology."

"I too believe that the industry is not totally broken but fractured. It can be healed and during this time of healing a complete restructure needs to take place. Understanding that the CUSTOMER is the heartbeat of the dealership and as such needs to be addressed for their needs first.
