When the rains came to the Delta region this past June, no one expected the devastation that would follow. What began as a forecast of less than an inch of rain quickly transformed into a catastrophic flooding event that submerged thousands of acres across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. For Jim and Lesli Whitaker, fifth-generation crop farmers from Shea County in southeast Arkansas, the disaster claimed over 2,500 acres of their farmland.
