Through his almost forty-year teaching career at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design he upheld functional ceramics as a conceptually rich medium that deserved equal footing in academia. One of the early adopters of earthenware Maiolica pottery in North America, Walter has been a major influence on generations of ceramic artists.
