My siblings recently called me out for being a “people pleaser” and while my first instinct was to deny it vehemently, that defensiveness was a sign for me to investigate why they might think that. Sure, I’m a sensitive and caring guy, but people pleasers are known for putting everyone else’s needs above their own, and I don’t want to be that person. It’s been shown that people pleasing leads to increased anxiety, burnout, codependency, feelings of powerlessness… the list goes on. So if you’re a people pleaser too, and you don’t want to be, I’m sharing 3 reframes we can all use to feel more control in our lives and remember that it’s okay to put ourselves first.
