BRAHMACHARYA - 14. SEX SUPPRESSION & SUBLIMATION - Sri Swami Sivanda - The Practice of Celibacy - HQ Full Book.
Understanding Suppression and Its Pitfalls
The essence of Brahmacharya (celibacy) lies in the elimination of lust, not in its suppression. Suppression is an incomplete and potentially harmful approach, as it leaves the root cause unaddressed. Suppressed desires are like coiled springs; they inevitably rebound with intensified force, leading to restlessness, irritability, and physical manifestations such as wet dreams. Suppression neither eradicates lust nor provides lasting peace—it merely hides the problem temporarily. True mastery over desires requires a more profound transformation. Lust cannot be conquered by avoiding external triggers, such as women or sensual distractions, alone. Doing so only strengthens the illusion (Maya), creating a more persistent inner conflict. The practice of Brahmacharya demands internal purification through spiritual exercises that transform base impulses into higher energies.
Foolish Attempts at Control
Many misguided methods to eliminate lust are rooted in ignorance. Some resort to drastic measures, such as mutilation of the reproductive organ or consuming toxic substances like nux vomica to kill their sexual drive. These acts, however, fail to address the real source of lust: the mind. The physical body is but a vessel. If the mind remains impure, external changes cannot purify it. The path to liberation lies in cultivating a disciplined and focused mind rather than relying on crude physical interventions. True Brahmacharya calls for controlling the senses, not suppressing them. The senses must be disciplined and prevented from overpowering the will. By cultivating restraint and redirecting attention toward spiritual growth, one can neutralize the disruptive pull of the senses and achieve inner harmony.
The Path of Sublimation: Transforming Energy
Brahmacharya involves not only restraint but also the redirection and transformation of sexual energy into spiritual vitality (ojas). This process, known as sublimation, is neither suppression nor repression. Instead, it is a dynamic conversion of raw energy into higher forms of spiritual power. Just as heat is transformed into light or electricity, sexual energy can be refined into a force that fuels spiritual pursuits. Through practices such as meditation, mantra repetition (japa), prayer, study of holy texts, breathing exercises (pranayama), and physical postures (asanas), sexual energy can ascend from its physical expression to a higher, subtler form. This redirected energy accumulates as ojas in the brain, where it nourishes spiritual growth and strengthens the aspirant’s willpower.
The Power of Sublimated Energy
The benefits of sublimation are profound. A person who has successfully transmuted sexual energy into ojas develops an extraordinary mental and spiritual capacity. Their intellect sharpens, their presence becomes magnetic, and their speech inspires and uplifts others. Historical figures such as Adi Shankaracharya exemplify the transformative power of Brahmacharya, achieving monumental feats through their accumulated spiritual energy. In Yogic science, such individuals are known as Oordhvaretas—those whose sexual energy has ascended to higher centers of consciousness. These practitioners have complete mastery over their desires, rendering them immune to worldly temptations. Their energy is no longer wasted on fleeting pleasures but directed toward self-realization and service to humanity.
The Subtle Nature of Energy
Yogic philosophy teaches that semen exists in both gross and subtle forms throughout the body. Under normal circumstances, it is concentrated and expressed through the sexual organs. However, a disciplined practitioner can prevent its formation altogether through purity of thought and yogic techniques. This subtle mastery of...
