61: Nefertite Nguvu, Director of Common's 'Love Star,' on Independent Filmmaking and Shaping the Narrative of Black Women in Film

Filmmaker Nefertite Nguvu first fell in love with film when her mother took her to see Gordon Parks's classic film, The Learning Tree, at a local film festival when she was a child. Since then, the Newark, New Jersey, native has known that utilizing the powerful medium of film to reflect the images and experiences of people of color was something she was destined to do. Despite a few detours, she is now passionately pursuing that dream.

Today, Nefertite is now the director of the 2013 award-winning independent film In the Morning, and of the new mini documentary from artist and Academy Award winner Common called Love Star. In the episode, Nefertite talks about her commitment to illustrating the stories of women and their experiences in and out of love, the power of art as a tool of cultural change and how, as an independent filmmaker, the most important thing you can do is figure out a way to get out your dreams -- by any means necessary.
