Charles Gibson, editor, illustrator, and owner of Life magazine, used his pen and paper to create the ideal image of the American woman at the turn of 20th century. His illustrations inspired women across the country to strive to be the "new woman" of the changing times, and encouraged men to embrace the shift in female independence and confidence.
