July 22, 1939...Jane Bolin was appointed family court judge in New York, becoming the first black female judge in the US.  Also, the first black woman to graduate from Yale Law School, she used the racial discrimination she faced as motivation to change segregationist policies.  She was reinstated for 3 terms, serving a total of 40 years before retiring at 70 years old.
