Emma Rowena Caldwell Gatewood was born October 25, 1887 in Ohio. She was a farmer stuck in a violent relationship until her community helped her escape. After raising her 11 children and reading an article in the National Geographic about the Appalachian Trail, she began her hiking adventures at the age of 66.
