James E. Sullivan...a co-founder of the Amateur Athletic Union, with an annual award present in his name, used the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri to conduct an experiment of the benefits of dehydration on athletes. His experiment failed miserably, proving the opposite, and nearly got the marathon removed from the Olympics.
