If you've gone backcountry camping in an Ontario Provincial Park in the last dozen years or so, you've likely used a map made by Jeff.
He joins us today to talk about how he got into map making, mistakes he found on "official" maps, some of the cool features he's integrated into his maps over the years, including a very cool new one in his latest Algonquin maps, and tells us a bit about his camping experiences - like a 31 day backcountry trip that involved horses!
- Jeff McMurtrie from Maps by Jeff discusses his journey into map-making, which started from frustration with inaccurate park maps. He emphasizes his iterative approach to map design.
- McMurtrie shares insights into his map-making process, highlighting his focus on clarity and problem-solving, which includes addressing common user questions through symbols, colours, and detailed information.
- He explains the evolution of difficulty ratings on his maps, from the original “newbie” to “extreme” scale to the current “typical,” “challenging,” and “very difficult,” along with “uncharted” routes to better manage user expectations.
- McMurtrie describes the inspiration and technical aspects behind his fluorescent inks used in Unlostify maps, and details his process for creating accurate portage profiles, enhancing usability for canoeists.
- He is currently reworking his map-making process to improve efficiency in data management and enable creation of multiple map types tailored for different activities, such as backpacking and off-trail adventures.
