We have all heard about vital organs. These are the bodily organs that are necessary to sustain life. Without their proper functioning, we will die. For this reason, medical professionals are trained to measure the vital signs of their patients. The vital signs reflect the functioning of the vital organs.
On a similar note, Merrill and Kyle introduce what they call Vital Beliefs. These are beliefs that everyone must have in order to sustain life in a healthy manner. The challenge with Vital Beliefs is that they are not so easily measured. In fact, they are intangible to our physical senses. They are things like love, truth, justice, faith, hope, purpose, and respect. They are not necessarily a feeling, but the presence of them can create a feeling of well-being. The lack of them can create of feeling of pain and hurt.
Vital Beliefs become more evident when people are forced to experience an evaluation of what is truly important in their life. For example, when a person's house burns down, you will often see complete destruction of cars, clothing, furniture, and even the entire house. But, when you encounter these people in the midst of the devastating loss, they will say things like; we lost a lot, be at least we still have each other. We still have our faith, We still have hope!
So, in this show, Merrill and Kyle discuss the essential need to understand and develop your Vital Beliefs. Take care of them as if they are a vital organ. Becoming intentional about such things allows a person to have greater perspective on how they are going to live their life.
