Guy Fawkes Day

Hello Edmund ! What day is it today ?

Hello Katie! It’s the fifth of November, Guy Fawkes Day!

What’s that?

It’s a tradition in the UK. In the 17th century, some men wanted to blow up Parliament and the King!

Oh, no! What happened?

The man who was left to blow up the building, Guy Fawkes, was caught and the king was saved.

Oh, good! So what do we do to remember this day?

On the fifth of November, every year, British people light a fire with a model of Guy Fawkes on it. We also have fireworks.

Fireworks are very loud and colourful. What do we eat on this day?

We usually eat sausages, baked potatoes and a kind of cake called tiffin.

Let’s have some cake and watch the fireworks!

Le poème suivant est appris et dit par les jeunes Anglais, lors de la journée de commémoration :

Remember, Remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
I can see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot
