Mastering the Art of Inner Reflection: 5 Unique Strategies for Managing Thoughts During Meditation

If you have ever said to yourself, “I can’t stop my thoughts, therefore I cannot meditate” then this episode is for you.

In this episode, I share five ways to deal with those pesky little thoughts that often come up during a meditation practice or when we are trying to fall asleep.

There are many more than five, but the ones I share in this episode are:

  1. Visualize that your thoughts are passing by like a news ticker, ticker tape or crawler does on the bottom of a tv screen.
  2. Visualize “swiping” away your thoughts like you would delete emails, or close tabs and screens on your phone.
  3. Visualize filling a balloon with the thoughts and then they float away.
  4. Pretend that any distracting thoughts are like unwanted guests at a dinner party. You don’t let them in or simply ignore them.
  5. If there are thoughts you want to hold onto, like creative ideas or solutions to a problem you have been struggling with practice being flexible with your meditation practice. Give yourself permission to pause and write the ideas down or set an intention at the beginning of the meditation to remember any ideas or thoughts that are important to you then practice trusting you can do just that.
