Summary:
Carbonation helps Yellowstones geysers erupt like shaken cans of soda, scientists report in two new studies. During the buildup to an eruption of Yellowstones Spouter Geyser, carbon dioxide accumulates in the geyser water, researchers report. The dissolved gas lowers the waters boiling point and triggers an eruption. This phenomenon may occur elsewhere in Yellowstone. Several of the parks other geysers, including Old Faithful, also contain abundant CO2 and other dissolved gases.
"Carbon Dioxide Shakes up Geysers" is from the April 16, 2016 issue of Science News.
