The microscopic marine organisms, an important food source in the ocean, use photosynthesis to turn sunlight into cellular fuel. But nearly twice as much of the sunlight energy captured by phyto-plankton is released as heat as is used to make food. The finding suggests that phytoplankton are not as efficient photosynthesizers as thought.
