Stepping Outside – Step Eleven (Part 2)

In this second part of step 11,… praying only for knowledge of His will for us, and the power to carry that out, there is no question in my mind that the thing phrase, the power to carry that out, is the result of the belief and realization of the power we have in step number two. I would like to speak more about praying only for knowledge of His will for us. The knowledge and direction that I received from my Spirit, assuming I am focused on the right way, is never wrong. Sometimes my “self” will fight to avoid listening to the direction of my Spirit. In many things I read, this “self” is given an actual personality called ego.

I must say that there is no actual thing that is our ego! The ego is a convenient name to give to certain personality traits of the person in general. The ego is not a bad thing. It is actually the self, doing what it must do in order to protect us and keep us safe. Our goal in these 12 steps, is not to eliminate that part of our selves that wants to keep us well, safe, and strong. No, our goal is to not need ourselves or our self worth, to be artificially inflated in any way. My goal is to allow my Spirit to override any possible aggrandizement at my “self” tries to add as some kind of artificial empowerment. My ultimate goal is to listen to my Spirit and follow that advice without any impediment from my “self”. Hence, I will try to develop a way of life that is more and more in line God’s wishes for me.
