I am going to skip around a little in this step. In this 2nd episode about step 4, I’ll talk about the word “moral”. What does moral mean? Well, here is what it means to me when I am trying to use these steps as a spiritual guide for my life. Morals are those guidelines, a spiritual yardstick, if you will, that I apply to the actions I have performed in my life to evaluate whether I have performed them in an acceptable or unacceptable manner. These actions can be right or wrong, depending, at this time of my life, on how much I am able to ‘turn things over’ to God.
Please remember, the idea is not to write a biography or list of all my rights and wrongs. I am looking for the deep connections, the root causes of my actions. For example, if I stole a hundred dollars from my father’s wallet, how do I deal with that? I stole $100? No. I am a thief? No. I wanted to feed my ego at the expense of others? Yeah, that’s the one!
I am not looking for particulars as much as ‘root causes’ – the things that motivated me to do the ‘wrong’ thing.
Finally, I must not forget those things I did (there may not be many) where I followed the golden rule, to treat others as I would want to be treated!
