In this episode, I would like to begin speaking about the last part of step number 12 and how we use this beautiful gift of compassion in order to share the gifts that we have received from God. The step tells us to practice these principles in all our affairs. This immediately brought to my mind, when I had finally decided to make these steps the foundation of my way of life, a phrase from a song, “easier said than done…”! At that time, I was struggling to put aside the automatic biases that I assigned to just about everyone. Believe me, my friends, it was difficult for me to look past the painted and molded shells that we all wear and see their true Spirit. This, for me, is one of the areas I have the most difficulty with, even today. When I pray, I tried my best to listen for my Spirits direction because it is what turning my will and my life over to God, means. I am still learning. My Spirit always steps the same answer, and that answer is always the same word, love! It’s a good thing I am reminded by the literature that we strive for perfection. I realize now, more than ever, that I am a work in progress, but it is infinitely better than the life I had before saying “yes” to God.
By the way, I am realizing that this gift of compassion is asking for one more episode. I have learned (the hard way) never to argue with my muse. So there will be episode five for this gift. Also, at the end of this series about the steps and gifts that are related to them, I will do a one- or two-part wrap-up of the series.
